Cycling

Cycling is the best way to explore Lisbon and the surrounding areas. Each year more and more eco-friendly and traffic-free cycling routes are being created although most are yet to join up. Cycling on Portuguese roads is safe, drivers are considerate to cyclists and in general will give way. At the end of 2016 plans were unveiled in Lisbon to double the one hundred kilometres of dedicated cycle paths. The hilly nature of Lisbon may seem off-putting to someone thinking about hiring a bike, they many decide to follow the flatter route of the river, however, there are a number of electric bike hire companies and hotels who will take much of the effort out of ascending Lisbon's hills.

Along the riverfront

Riverside route cycling in Lisbon

Riverside route cycling in Lisbon

The riverside route (Eixo Marginal) is the most popular cycle route with visitors for two reasons; one it's flat and two, it has many world-famous landmarks along its course. Ok... there is a third reason, the views across the river along with its cool breezes. Most users of this cycle route pick up the path around the Praça do Comércio or the Cais do Sodré train station and peddle the seven kilometres west along the riverfront to Belém. Along the way, you'll pass the Doca de Alcântara cafés and bars, an ideal lunchtime stop. You'll also pass the Museu do Oriente, go under the 24 Abril bridge, the MAAT, before arriving at the attractions of Belém itself. You could always choose to return by train which follows the same route. Be mindful of other users of the path, such as walkers, joggers, anglers, roller-skaters and scooter riders.

The riverside route actually starts in the Parque das Nações in the shadow of the Vasco da Gama on the Passeio do Tejo. The route goes right through the former Expo park and past the marina. South of here the path is intermittent and follows roads through working docks. The process of joining up traffic-free routes is ongoing.
