Lisbon: Myths and Realities

Lisbon: Myths and Realities

The Lisboa Story Centre comprises six distinct areas utilising various forms of media. Each area demonstrates in chronologically order the defining events and aspects that shaped the history and character of Lisbon.

Area 1 - Lisbon: Myths and Realities
In this first area of your tour, you will discover the city's origins. The importance of the river Tejo (Tagus) and how it attracted traders and colonisers from ancient times. See the first settlements and how Lisbon grew in importance. How stories of this distant time are immersed in myth and legend.

Area 2 - Lisbon: Global City (comprising the Cosmopolitan City
In this second space, Lisbon has evolved into a global trading centre during Portugal's age of discovery. Lisbon is considered the warehouse of the world.

Area 3 - November 1, 1755, All-Saints' Day
A dark day for Portugal and it's capital city. A series of powerful earthquakes hit the country followed by a massive tsunami on one of the most sacred days in the Christian calendar. Churches collapsed with parishioners inside. Lit candles sparked city-wide fires. Whole districts were destroyed and approximately 60,000 people lost their lives.
Area 4 - Pombal's Vision
It is now a period of re-building, the age of enlightenment, new hopes and new politics. It is also the ear that saw the enigmatic Marquis of Pombal reach the zenith of his power. He was one of the main protagonists of the rebirth of Lisbon and who rebuild the city in only one year.

Area 5 - Terreiro do Paço Before the earthquake, Terreiro do Paço was where the royal palace was located. During this time it has become the Praça do Commercio, the centre of commerce and trade.

Area 6 - Exploring Lisbon
See the Baixa Pombalina district in miniature on a scaled model with interactive multimedia devices, depicting more than a dozen key events from the city's history.
