Mad About Lisbon

Located in the prestigious district of Alfama, next to Chafariz d'El-Rei, the first-ever public fountain in Lisbon dating back to 1487, Taylor’s Port wine shop and tasting room showcases a wide range of Ports and is the first of its kind in Lisbon. This recently opened space includes a shop on the ground floor and three tasting rooms on the first floor. There are 15 wines available to try in the tasting room, starting at €5.00. Among these are icons such as Taylor’s Vintage 1994 (34€) or Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas Vintage 2015 (10€). For those who wish to broaden their knowledge, we suggest the ‘Introduction to Taylor’s”, a tasting of 5 wines that define the profile and style of our Port wines: Taylor’s Chip Dry, Taylor’s LBV, Taylor’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port, Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas Vintage 2015 and Taylor’s Vintage 2009.

Garrafeira Nacional

Garrafeira Nacional has been in the hands of the same family since it opened in 1927 and has accumulated a unique assemblage of wines and spirits, both Portuguese and international. Garrafeira Nacional has created a dedicated museum within its main store in the Baixa district to show off this collection where all clients and visitors will be able to admire and enjoy some of the rarest and oldest Ports and wines. The oldest is a bottle of Madeira dating back to 1715.

Garrafeira Nacional also has a shop within the Time Out Market where their enthusiasm is equally infectious as the shop and museum. In both locations, there's usually a bottle open for you to sample.

PENÍNSULA DE SETÚBAL

Palmela Castle

Palmela Castle

South of the Tagus (Tejo) river is the Península de Setúbal wine region which is centred mainly around the town of Palmela and Azeitão near the Arrábida mountain range. The Arrabida mountain protects the vines from the influence of the Atlantic. The sandy soil is poor for agriculture yet ideal for producing high-quality wine. The climate here is the temperate Mediterranean, therefore summers are hot and dry and winters are slightly rainy. This attractive region makes a great day out from Lisbon either as part of an organised tour or by self-conducted car trip. The most famous brands from the area include José Maria Fonseca, Bacalhôa and Casa Ermelinda Freitas, all of whom offer guided tours and tasting.

COLARES WINE

The Colares wine region located around Sintra is one of the worlds oldest producing areas, if not one of the unusual. It is the second oldest demarcated wine regions in Portugal after the Douro. The art of making wine here was introduced by the Romans when they occupied the region. The vines are planted in the dunes which follow the coast, trained low to avoid the Atlantic winds. This terrain proved too harsh for the phylloxera louse that devastated nearly all of Europe's vines in the 19th century. The shortage of competitors led to a boom in the popularity of Colares wines. However, the processes involved in planting and training vines in such an alien environment for grapes is arduous. Production has fallen sharply in the last 50 years from 2,500 acres of vineyards in the 1940s to just 50 acres today.

What is produced is of excellent quality and quite distinct. The acidic and tannic nature of the reds mean they're aged for years before being released on the market. Today there is a consorted effort to revitalise the industry. New vines are being planted in much sort after areas where holiday homes are in high demand.
