Mad About Lisbon

About

Lisbon Zoo
Re-entry is permitted on the same day. Expect to take a minimum of three hours to explore the zoo, with many visitors spending their entire day there. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a stroller if you have small children with you, as the heat and walking distances can be tiring, especially in summer. The zoo is subdivided and arranged in varying habitats, with rare and unusual animals in each. The zoo is subdivided and arranged in varying habitats, with rare and unusual animals in each. In the rainforest area you'll find gorillas and Sumatran tigers. Elephants, lions, giraffes, and more are found in the dry African savannah section. There's always some monkeying around in the Primate’s Temple. Look out for the troop of chimpanzees and a small group of moon-faced orangutans. Get close to big cats, they like to come right up to the glass barriers of the Tigers Valley. Watch dolphins and their trainers going through their 20 minute routines three times a day at the Dolphin’s Bay. See these impresive mammals perform somersaults, dives and jumps in a purpose-built swimming area. For more simian shenanigans, Monkey Village is home to squirrel-sized tamarins and marmosets. Bigger monkeys can be spotted playing on what looks like a giant assault course with ropes, cargo nets, swings and wooden walkways. There's a children's zoo where youngsters can get up close to several types of baby animals, including calves, lambs, miniature pigs, and others.

Cable Car

One essential attraction is the cable car which has small bucket-like cabs for standing. Get a birds eye view of the zoo and a different perspective of many of the exhibits and the city beyond. A journey takes around 20 minutes, with children under the age of 12 need to be accompanied by an adult. A small train also meanders around the majority of the enclosures, offering a leisurely alternative to walking. There is also good access throughout most of the zoo for visitors with limited mobility, and wheelchairs are available to borrow from the ticket office. It's worth arriving early if you wish to borrow one, however, since numbers are limited and you can't reserve in advance.
