MEO Arena - aerial view

Before its construction, Lisbon lacked a major indoor arena and as a consequence, Lisbon was overlooked somewhat by top acts and sporting events. Expo '98 gave city planners the ideal opportunity to rectify this deficiency and build Portugal's largest indoor entertainment venue. The arena is a masterpiece of design by Portuguese architect Regino Cruz, in association with a leading international consultant: Skidmore, Owings & Merril (SOM). While the exterior resembles a flying saucer, the interior is reminiscent of a 16th-century ship's hull with a framework of wooden struts.

Since its conception it has been known by many names. Initially it was called the Pavilion of Utopia during the Expo '98, and housed the show titled "Oceans and Utopias". Then it was the Pavilhão Atlântico, the Altice Arena, and now, the MEO Arena. It has various auditoria hosting concerts, business conferences, indoor sporting events and exhibitions. It's well worth your time to see what's on when planning your trip.
